Ko Lanta

From Surat Thani we got a minivan to Krabi and then another onto Ko Lanta. We are staying at the Blue Andaman resort which is nice but we haven't had the best of weather so far (there are floods everywhere in Thailand at the moment). We're not sure how long we'll stay before we go to Trang and then from there on to Penang in Malaysia. We've been searching high and low for a Malaysia Lonely Planet or Rough Guide without success so I guess we'll just have to see how it goes...hopefully we'll find one in Penang.

On our first night in Ko Lanta we met a nice couple at the bar and drank with them all night...slight handgovers yesterday but we had an excellent meal at a nice restaurant in the evening to help us get over it! The couple told us they were paying 300 Baht for their room where as we were paying 400, so the next morning we were able to negotiate down to 300 - seems very low as we have a TV, nice big room, hot water, and a swimming pool, all 10m from the beach! We may well meet up with the couple we met again in Bali as they will be there at the same time as us.

Sorry about the lack of photos - this machine doesn't allow me to upload images from the digital camera - we'll update again soon hopefully.

In the absence of a Lonely Planet book on Malaysia, try http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/malaysia. It lists 30 accommodation sites for Penang, including several at Batu Ferringhi, which I think is the place that Ed and I stopped at when on the MTS cricket tour a few years ago.

I thought it seemed familiar round here - don't suppose you can remember the name of the hotel we stayed in?

I don't remember the name of the hotel, but it was a tall building about 100 yds from the beach, with a road between the hotel and the beach. I think it was on the Georgetown side of Batu Ferringhi village.

Glad you went to Ko Lanta - I went there a few years ago, but was a bit worried that the place might have been washed away by the tsunami. I stayed in a little resort with small huts right next to the beach - can't remember the name, but sounds similar to where you stayed. I seem to remember people being very friendly here...

We had a chat with the barman and the Blue Andaman in Ko Lanta. He had photos of the Xmas Party the day before the tsunami hit...they realised it was happening and legged it about 100m up the road to their motorcycles and rode off into the slopes...apparently no fatalities at that resort.

We didn't get much good weather though which was a pity - the place seemed great...
